East Cork Scór

Well done to all of our participants in Scór Na bPáistí, Babhtaí Leathcheannais Uí Mac Choille last weekend in Lisgoold.

Representing the club we had Rory O’Connor – Instrumental, Ashling Broderick - Solo Dance, Megan O’Shea - Solo Singing, Tom Fennell, Donagh McHugh, Donncha Riordan, MJ Walsh - Tráth na gCeist.

Scór Na bPáisti is an important cultural part of our clubs, championed through the years by our president Lizzie O'Leary and now also through our cultural officer Aisling Fitzgerald.

A great day was had by all and Congratulations to Ashling Broderick who qualified for Craobh Uí Mac Choille on Sunday March 5th

It was certainly heart-warming to see that on and off the field, our Gaelic heritage is alive and well, especially through the efforts of so many young people.

Reeling In The Year

Looking back to March and April of 2022, we had the most memorable of days on Thursday March 3rd. In the words of Van Morrison "my mama told me, there'd be days like this".

As a small rural club, we are of the community & for the community. As GAA people we represent our families, our parish and our clubs. As hurlers, we dream of climbing the steps of Croke Park or Semple Stadium and "bringing it home".

Well on March 3rd, 2022 - all that came to pass as Daire O'Leary, Sean Desmond, Brendan Lehane and Mick O'Driscoll visited Watergrasshill National School with Munster & All-Ireland, U-17 and U-20 trophies which they won with Cork last year. To say we're proud of these young men is an understatement & last year they got to share a great occasion with the next generation of boys & girls who hope to follow in their footsteps. A proud day also for Áine & Mary who both work in the school & for Brendan and Seán who are past pupils.

The Rebel Óg program got off to a flying start in March 2022 with wins for our U-13, U-14 and U-15 teams against Fermoy, Castlelyons and Mayfield respectively.

Towards the end of March, Sheila Power made the trip to Cork University Hospital to present a cheque for €43,600 to the CUH group of charities. Sheila lost her husband Richie in 2021 and has fundraised every year to return the kindness & care shown to her by CUH staff before, during and after Richie’s passing. We are in awe of Sheila and the Power and Fitzgerald’s strength and continue to keep Richie in our thoughts.

In April, our U-11’s busy hosting Blackrock and then hosting St. Finbarr’s the following morning – some effort from the lads, their trainers and parents to play on 2 successive days. Not to be out-done, our U-10’s were invited to play in The Cashman Cup, an annual invitational tournament hosted by Blackrock National Hurling Club. We had 2 teams entered playing St. Finbarr’s and Youghal in Round 1 and Blackrock, Glen Rovers, Éire Óg, Blarney and Carrigtwohill over the course of the tournament.

We also unfortunately lost Pat McHugh in April 2022. Pat McHugh was a GAA man through and through and as well as an illustrious playing career with both Glenville and Watergrasshill, Pat also gave his time tirelessly as coach, volunteer and officer for both Watergrasshill and Glenville for many years. The McHugh family are steeped in the GAA history of our parish, a history which is continued by his sons Jerry and Padraig to this day. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Action Returns

On field action returns this week with our junior hurlers opening the season with a trip to Ballynoe to face St. Catherine’s in the Junior D2 League. On Saturday our U-18’s head to Cobh to open their league campaign and our Intermediates head to Ballygiblin to open their campaign. We wish all of the teams well and full fixture details can be found below.

2023 Membership now open

Our 2023 club membership is now open and we would encourage everyone to renew as soon as possible. Our playing, non-playing and social membership options are available again this year. It’s not just important for players to complete their membership for insurance and registration purposes, but social and non-playing members are just as important to ensure we have up to date member numbers, this help with Capital grant applications to GAA organisations and external private funding to help us continue to develop the best possible facilities for our community.

This year we have simplified the registration process by moving to the Foireann platform, which is provided by the GAA. Everyone will already have profiles set-up on Foireann from the days of COVID health questionnaires, but anyone who needs extra support to resister can just contact any club officer and we’ll gladly help you out.

Rebels Bounty 2023

The Rebels Bounty draw is an initiative of "One Cork" to give clubs a significant opportunity to raise funds. Proceeds from every ticket sold above minimum targets go directly to our clubs in Watergrasshill & Glenville.  We had a fantastic response in 2021 and tickets are now up for renewal. We are asking all members and supporters to renew again this year and support this very important fundraised for both clubs. The 2022 prize fund is over €500,000 with 30 chances to win every month. Entries can be made on-line via www.gaacork.ie/rebelsbounty or through any club member. If you need any assistance, feel free to contact Brian or Paud or please email rebelsbounty@gaa.ie or hillglenvillerebelsbounty@gmail.com. Your support is greatly appreciated with much needed funds going directly into supporting your club and your community, míle buiochas duitse go léir.

Lotto

There was no winner of the Lotto Jackpot this week. Numbers drawn were 10, 23, 26 & 30. Lucky dip winners are Kieran Cotter, Martin O’Riordan, John O’Connor (Minane) & Grace Anna McCarthy. Congrats to you all. Next week's jackpot is €2,400 and draw will take place on February 13th in The Fir Tree Bar. Tickets are on sale in some of the village businesses like The Hut Bar, The Fir Tree, Johnny's Shop and our new Lotto stand in Ross's Centra. Tickets can also be purchased on-line via our club website (www.watergrasshillgaa.ie). The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members and supporters of the Watergrasshill GAA Club Lotto. The Club Lotto is a vital source of income for the running of all our teams within the Club and for future development of our facilities, so we ask you to please support it if you are in a position to do so. Remember, if you’re not in you can’t win.
