Super win for Fé17 team

U17 East Cork D1 Shield Final

Watergrasshill 3-13 (22) Nemo Rangers 2-10 (16)

A very solid performance by our U17s saw them win the East Cork D1 Shield in Mayfield on Sunday morning.

Played in great weather on a superb pitch, Nemo scored first with a quick point but the Hill reacted quickly with five unanswered points in nine minutes. Cian Cronin-O’Neill was in razor sharp form and gave a master class in free taking, some amazing long-range conversions, scoring 1-3 from frees in the first half and a further 3 in the second half.

The Hill defended strongly with Nemo scoring a single point from play in the first half. The Hill pushed hard playing some excellent hurling with captain Ciarán O’Leary leading by example scoring 1-1 from play in the first half with Liam Foley adding another 2 points from play. The score at half time was Watergrasshill 2-7 to Nemo’s 0-6.

Bobby Kelleher had a cracker of a start to the second half scoring 1-1 in the first five minutes and extending the Hill’s lead to 11 points. The remaining 25 minutes was an even match with both sides trading scores, the Hill scoring 5 points (3 from frees by Cian) while Nemo found better form scoring 2-4 of which 2-1 came from play. Watergrasshill settled better in the last quarter and saw out the game with a 6-point win on a score line of 3-13 (22) to 2-10 (16).

Ciarán O’Leary accepted the cup on behalf of the team and dedicated the win to the late Bernard Burke (his son Donagh is part of the U17 squad), a great supporter of the team.

It was fitting that the lads collected some silverware as for 9 of the panel, this was their final game as juveniles for the club. The majority of these lads have been together since U6 and they have won a plethora of honours down through the years including league honours at Fé 12, Fé 13 & Fé 14, county honours at Fé 13 & Fé 14 and national Féile honours at U-14 in 2019. With no games in 2020 at U-15 due to COVID and a non-existent season in 2021 at U-16 due to the Rebel Óg focus on odd ages post COVID, they went almost 2 years with no competitive action at what could be argued, the most critical age for player development & retention.

In spite of all that, with Mick O’Driscoll and Liam Foley representing Cork at minor level, Ciarán O’Leary, Cian Cronin O’Neill and Fionn Fitzgerald representing at Primary games level and Cian Cronin O’Neill also claiming national & Munster handball titles as well as Cork U-16 long puck (at the age of 14) – this group have not only tasted great success but also some bitter defeats down through the years.

In naming names, there is always risk of missing someone but along with their current management team of Ger O’Brien, Mike Moore, Tom Bowe, Aidan Foley, Dermot O’Mahony and Dan Linehan it’s worth mentioning Derek Casey, Donal Lehane, Martin O’Riordan, Andrew O’Callaghan and Darragh O’Callaghan who have all at some point helped mentor this group down through the years and great credit must go to those men for giving their time to help develop the next generation. Go raibh mile maith agaibh go léir and good luck to the lads as they transition to our adult ranks.

Hard Luck to our U-12 boys

Rebel Óg East Fé12 Group 3 Shield Final

Watergrasshill 1-11 V 5-12 Youghal

It wasn’t to be for our U-12 boys as they lost out to a very strong Youghal side last weekend in their Shield Final. Having beaten Youghal earlier on the campaign, our boys went into the game without any fear. But Youghal were certainly a different proposition this time around and came out on-top. The boys have had a great run this year, in their first taste of competitive action and we congratulate them on a great year. Thanks to the mentors for the group John O’Sullivan, Tony Sheehan, Dominic Moynihan, Brendan Kearney and Johnny O’Connell for giving their time for the lads during the year. Thanks also to the boys’ parents who have supported the mall year both training and matches, your support is greatly appreciated. Well done to all the boys and we have no doubt that there are brighter days ahead for this super group of kids whose work rate, comradery and spirit are second to none.

One more final down for decision

There’s on more final down for decision this weekend when our Fé15 team face Cobh in the Rebel Óg East Fé15 D2 Championship Final. The game is currently fixed for 4pm on Saturday 8th in Mayfield, but this is subject to change.

We wish the boys the very best of luck and hope that they can prevail and a county final with Kinsale awaits the winners. This is the only shot for any team in the club for county honours this year, so maybe a nice extension to the campaign so we wish the boys and the management team the very best of luck. We wish the boys the very best of luck and hope that they can prevail and a county semi-final with Kinsale awaits the winners.
