Crunch-Time

As the hurling season approaches “crunch-time” there are many season defining games up for grabs. At the time of writing there are 3 such games on the horizon and one just played.

Last weekend the Imokilly Senior Hurlers went the distance against Blackrock, eventually losing out on penalties. To their credit, Denis Ring’s side looked to have done enough at the end of normal time but the concession of a late goal, 2 minutes into added time meant extra-time was on the cards. Imokilly picked themselves up again and having conceded another sucker-punch goal in the 2nd extra period, it was Imokilly’s turn to tie things up with a pointed 65, 2 minutes into added-time after extra time from William Leahy. Losing on penalties was a strange finish to a game, but from a Watergrasshill perspective the contributions of Seán Desmond (0-3) and Kevin O’Neill were outstanding and along with Aaron Ricken have proven themselves to be key components of this young Imokilly set-up for the coming years.

This week will also see our Fé-15 and Fé-17 teams play in championship semi-final action in the D2 Cup and D1 League respectively. Best of luck to the boys and we hope they can keep their good form going and progress for a chance to take some silverware.

Crunch-time of a different sort awaits our Junior Hurlers with their final championship game against Fr. O’Neill’s this Saturday. Having put in their best display of the season last weekend in a narrow defeat to Killeagh in monsoon conditions in Ballynoe – we wish the lads well in this crucial tie.

Sympathies

The members of Watergrasshill GAA Club offer our sympathies to the O’Neill and Buckley families on the sad passing of Lil Buckley (nee O’Neill of Doon, Glenville and formerly of Kearney’s Cross, Watergrasshill). The O’Neill, Buckley and Fitzgerald families are a huge part of our club and have been and continue to be active members and supporters of our club at player, administrative, executive and supporter level. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. May her soul rest in peace.

The members of Watergrasshill GAA Club also extend our sympathies to the Cavanagh family on the passing of their father, Tom.

Tom Cavanagh was gentleman in the true sense of the word, a phenomenally successful businessman with deep local roots. He was a highly accomplished athlete, hurler, footballer and basketballer in his youth. He was passionate about community with a deep social conscience. Tom didn’t just talk about the need to strengthening and improving social and community social infrastructure, he established the Tomar Trust in 1994, which has financially supported an enormous number of local initiatives in the provision of much needed social, community and sporting facilities across Munster. He made a huge contribution to developing infrastructure in UCC, launched Irish Business Against Litter to combat littering and helped deliver huge improvements to Fermoy Hospital and Fermoy schools – resources that so many people from Watergrasshill benefit from every day.

Watergrasshill will be shortly commencing work on our flood-lit AstroTurf pitch and this will be become a reality through significant support from the Tomar Trust. When we play on this facility, we will remember Tom and Marie Cavanagh and the very significant support they have given us.  May his gentle soul rest in peace.
