Results Round Up

It was a relatively quiet week on the hurling front in terms of numbers of games, but the one game that did go ahead, certainly had plenty of drama. On Saturday evening, our Intermediates started their Co-Op Superstores Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship campaign against Éire Óg in Blarney. With rain falling all morning on Saturday and getting heavier as the game progressed, our discomfort on the sidelines was surpassed by the difficult underfoot & handling conditions on the pitch. Having said all that, Watergrasshill got off to a flyer with Dáire O’Leary registering the first score of the game after just 15 seconds. Paddy O’Regan (from a 65) and Brendan Lehane (from play) also registered scores as we led 0-0 to 0-3 after 11 minutes. Éire Óg eventually opened their account with 2 frees from placed balls on 12 and 14 minutes and eventually registered their first score from play on 15 minutes. The first green flag was raised by Éire Óg on 16 minutes after a great save by Aidan Foley, his attempt to gather the rebound was hampered by the conditions and the ball was dispatched to the net to give Éire Óg the lead 1-3 to 0-4. To their credit, our lads never missed a beat and were back on plan straight away registering the next 2 scores to level matters again on 23 mins 1-3 to 0-6. That resilience was a hallmark of the performance, for everything thrown at this young side, they regrouped, backed themselves and went again. That resilience was tested again on 29 minutes when we conceded the 2nd goal of the game, however a Paddy O’Regan free before the break reduced the deficit to 2 points at the break, 2-4 to 0-8.

We were fast out of the blocks again in the second half with an Anthony Cronin point reducing the gap to the minimum. The sides continued to swap scores throughout the 3rd quarter, with Seán Desmond registering his 1st two scores of the game on the 12th and 14th minute – the game was finely balanced 2-7 to 0-12 as we passed the mid-way point of the second half. With Brendan Lehane and Paddy O’Leary levelling the game after 25 minutes, up stepped James Gowen who landed a beauty to give us a one point lead with just 2 minutes on the clock. When Alan O’Connor indicated 4 minutes of extra-time to be added he might as well have said 4 hours as time seemed to stand still – but in the blink of an eye Éire Óg added 2 scores and suddenly it seemed like the game was done. Thankfully, Colin Cronin didn’t read the script and having replaced Kieran O’Keeffe who sustained a freak injury from a sideline cut, Colin slotted over a deserving equalizer with the last puck of the game to draw the match 2-10 to 0-16.

Well done to both teams having dealt with the difficult conditions. There is massive credit due to our men who showed heart, resilience and a never say die attitude to keep coming back. It was great to see the youth of Brendan Lehane and Ryan Murray alongside the experience of Kieran O’Keeffe and Paddy O’Regan. Dáire O’Leary was calmness personified at center back and with James Gowen and Anthony Cronin also impressing this team showed their mettle as they backed each other to the end.

Elsewhere this week, championship action continues apace with our U-15’s hosing St. Catherine’s on Wednesday evening, our U-17’s travelling to Cobh on Friday evening and our Intermediates facing Castlelyons in Rathcormac also on Friday evening. Our Junior A hurlers close out the weekend with their opening Championship tie against Carraig na bhFear in Lisgoold on Sunday evening. The very best of luck to all our teams and please do try to get out to support the lads if you can.

Reminder that tickets for the Intermediate Championship are only available on-line from www.corkgaa.ie/tickets with no cash accepted at the gate. However, cash will be accepted at the gate for the Junior Championship games run by the Imokilly board.

Upcoming Cúl Camp

Excitement is building ahead of our upcoming Cúl camp which will be running from 15th August to 19th August in Watergrasshill. With over 200 kids registered, this promises to be one of our biggest and hopefully most successful camps in recent years. Given the restrictions on camps over the past 2-3 years, this year is sure to be a fun week for all the kids involved. As always, we are looking for coaches, supervisors and camp assistants so please reach out to Barry Joyce is you can assist in any way during the week to help make this years’ camp a success.

An Cupán Tae

As you may have noticed, our newly opened match-day café “An Cupán Tae” is now up and running. An Cupán Tae is based in our clubroom and will be open on match-days providing tea, coffee, soft-drinks and snacks. Keep an eye on our social media channels for detailed opening hours and please do pop in and say hello and grab a snack before, during or after one of our upcoming home games.
