Weekly Notes 15.08.2021   16/08/2021

A busy week in store for Watergrasshill

At the time of writing, a very busy week is in store for all involved with Cnocán Na Biolraí.

From an inter-county perspective, first up is the All-Ireland U-20 hurling championship where Cork will face Galway. The delayed final will now be held on Wednesday 18th August in Semple Stadium and as you are reading this piece, the outcome has already been decided. Regardless of the result, everyone associated with Cnocán Na Biolraí would like to wish Dáire O’Leary, Seán Desmond and the Cork management & players all the very best for the final. We are very proud of the achievements of both Dáire and Seán with the Cork U-20’s who have represented our parish, our club and their families with great distinction.

Also on the inter-county scene – Saturday 21st August sees the final of the All-Ireland Minor hurling championship in Semple Stadium, again facing Galway. We have 2 members of the Cork panel Brendan Lehane and Michael O’Driscoll. We wish Brendan and Mick the very best of luck on Saturday. These two boys have been shining lights throughout their underage years with the club and we are extremely proud of their achievements and congratulate them both as well as their families on their success. Everyone associated with Cnocán Na Biolraí wish them well in the final on Saturday evening.

Returning to more local matters – Saturday 21st also sees the return of Féile Na nÓg 2021. After missing last year due to COVID, Féile returns this year in an amended format. Now at Fé-15 age level, our boys will face Aghabullogue, Mayfield & Erins Own in Mayfield on Saturday 21st in their group games with Ballygarvan, Tracton or Passage West awaiting the winners. This year’s competition will run differently than previous years with the traditional club & player exchange of previous years replaced by county run competitions in Phase 1 with a second phase at Halloween whereby county champions at each grade will get a chance to play in either Croke Park or Thurles to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the competition first run in Thurles in 1971. We would like to wish Ger, Martin and all of the players the very best of luck and hope they have a memorable Féile Na nÓg experience.

Finally all this week we have Cúl camp running in Watergrasshill. It is fitting that in a week where we report on the inter-county and Féile teams in our club, that we also have cúl camp running. Cúl camp is a great occasion where our junior members get a chance to have fun, play games and develop friendships. It’s also a chance for our adult and older juvenile members to coach and mentor some of our more junior members. Whilst numbers are limited due to COVID restrictions – we hope all those who are participating have an enjoyable week and extend our gratitude to all of those who are volunteering their time to ensure that the camp can go-ahead.

Remembering Bernard Burke

It is with great regret and sadness that we record the sudden and untimely passing of Bernard Burke. Bernard was a huge supporter of our club and his son Donagh is a valued member of our Minor panel. An outgoing and sociable character, he was a great man to support our club, but his county loyalty remained with his native Tipperary. Bernard attended many of our games and was great company to be in at matches and afterwards, with a great read of the game, sharp wit and a huge sense of fun and mischief. Bernard ran his own IT company and was highly respected by his client base. He had a natural skill of making friends and made everyone welcome and comfortable in his company.

We express our sympathies and condolences to his wife Maureen, daughters Jade, Hazel and son Donagh and the Burke family on their enormous loss.

Comhbhrón ó chroí ort as bás do chéile ionúin agus is trua linn do chás.

Tá tú inár gcuid smaointe agus paidreacha.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal

Lotto

There was no winner of the Lotto Jackpot this week. Numbers drawn were 3, 19, 20 & 32. Lucky dip winners are Deirdre Buckley, Aisling Desmond, Emer Fennell & Denis Crowley. Congrats to you all. Next week's jackpot is a cool €9,400 and draw will take place Monday 23rd August. Tickets are on sale in some of the village businesses, like Centra & Johnny's Shop. Tickets can also be purchased on-line via our club website (www.watergrasshillgaa.ie). The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members and supporters of the Watergrasshill GAA Club Lotto. The Club Lotto is a vital source of income for the running of all our teams within the Club and for future development of our facilities, so we ask you to please support it if you are in a position to do so. Remember, if you’re not in you can’t win.

Pitch Signage & Advertising Opportunity

As we enter a new decade, we do so with great optimism and excitement here at Watergrasshill GAA Club. Later this decade we will celebrate our centenary year, which will be a special milestone. While it's important to celebrate the past and the history of the club, it’s also important we look forward to the future. With this in mind, the club will shortly be undertaking a development project, to prepare the club for the future and further position ourselves at the center of our community. Part of this project will be the development of our existing club grounds. To that end we will endeavor to raise a revenue stream from advertising, while giving businesses the opportunity to advertise their services and reach a wider audience within our community. With the playing numbers on the increase our facility will be a busy spot over the coming years, and we would love to have your name and business positioned in the hearts and minds of all those who visit on a weekly basis. We are offering advertising space via pitch signage, 3000mm wide x 750mm high. These are a 5-year gloss laminate, flash mounted to 0.2mm skin diabond sign. If you would be interested in this opportunity to advertise and support our club, please contact Claire O Leary on 087-6239297 or any member of the club who can provide assistance.
