Intermediates Action

All eyes turn to this Friday night and our Intermediates last group game in the Championship. Our opponents are Valley Rovers and the game, played in Ovens has a throw in at 7.30pm. We currently sit top of our group after two wins from two but this game will be a tough and tricky encounter. A win we hope guarantees a Championship semi final spot (it will depend on results of games in both other groups) with a loss putting us into a quarter final. With the Government restrictions on spectators at sporting events hindering people going to see the game, fear not, as we will be Live streaming this game via our Club Facebook page.

Juniors bow out of the Championship

Our Juniors bowed out of this year's East Cork Championship with a 1-17 to 3-17 loss to near neighbours Carrig na bhFear. Our opponents got off to the better start and showed very quickly the danger they possessed up front putting two early goals on the scoreboard and taking a commanding 2-7 to 6-point lead inside the opening quarter. Our lads took time finding their rhythm and found it hard to claw back on the scoreboard and at halftime went in 9 points down, 2-12 to 9 points. To their credit they came out in the second half and battled hard but another early goal by Carrig na bhFear was a killer. Despite this the Hill pushed on and a goal gave us back some hope. The final quarter was tit for tat and despite winning the second have and reducing the game to two pucks of a ball, those two early goals proved to be the difference and Carrig na bhFear progress in the Championship on a final score of Watergrasshill 1-17, Carrig na bhFear 3-17. Best of luck to Carrig na bhFear for the remainder of this year's competition.

Juvenile Update

With our Nursery group enjoying their second week back to training following their COVID postponement, Saturday mornings in Watergrasshill are well and truly filled with excitement, enthusiasm and energy from our U-6’s. The U-6’s play both Hurling and Football with their team mates from Glenville on Saturday mornings in Watergrasshill. If there are any parents who would like to get their children started off in this friendly, non-competitive environment, they can drop a line to pro.watergrasshill.cork@gaa.ie or contact us over any of our social media channels and we would delighted to put you in contact with one of our coaches for that group.

It was a very mixed week both on and off the pitch for our juvenile teams this week. Both our U-16 and minor teams suffered their first defeats of the compressed season against Passage and St. Catherine’s respectively, however both progressed to the knockout stages on foot of victories in the previous rounds.

It wasn’t to be this year for our U-14’s as they don’t progress through from their league group, but they finished their campaign in style with a 3-15 to 2-11 win against Cois Bhride on Sunday afternoon. Cois Bhride are an amalgamation of Waterford clubs, Tallow and Knockanore Shamrocks and are currently preparing for the Waterford County Final. This victory is just rewards for this group of very talented young hurlers. Their spirit and determination to win this game following the disappointment of not progressing from their Rebel Óg group, shows how resilient they are. Huge credit goes to the lads, their parents and to Ger O’Brien and Martin O’Riordan under whose guidance this team are sure to experience brighter days ahead.

Our U-16’s lost out to Passage in their final group game of their Rebel Óg East, League Division 1A group. This was truly a game of two halves. The first half belonged to Watergrasshill, who started brightly and took the lead through a Colm O’Regan point from play. With midfield dominating, the team went in at half-time on a score line of Passage 0-04 to Watergrasshill 0-13. The second half belonged to Passage who never gave up at any stage during the contest. Four goals from 2 penalties and open play swung the fixture in favor of Passage, who took the lead with 5 minutes to play, outscoring the Hill by 4-05 to 0-06 in the second half to finish with a deserved two point victory. Top scoring for Watergrasshill on the night were Mike O’Driscoll (0-4), Liam Foley (0-4) and Sam Dennehy(0-4). Things just didn't happen on the day for the team, who have qualified for the league semi-finals after finishing in the top two of the league having defeated Lisgoold and Cobh in previous rounds. They now face a very strong Killeagh/Ita’s team in the semi-final on Sunday August 30th, in Watergrasshill at 5pm.

Our minors also lost out in their final group game in the Rebel Óg East, U-18 Hurling Championship, Division 2B. In a game played in bad conditions in the run up to Storm Emma, this was a tightly fought game that was a draw on three occasions in the first half alone. Watergrasshill were a point ahead at half-time (0-7 to 0-6). In the second half, it was still a very tight affair, but St. Catherine’s built up a lead in the final quarter of five points. That was pulled back again by the Hill to two points before St. Catherine’s added three late points in the final seven minutes to run out winners on a score line of 0-17 to 0-12. Scorers on the night for Watergrasshill were Brendan Lehane 0-8 (0-7 frees); Daire O’Leary 0-3 (0-2 frees); Liam Foley 0-1. Well done to the lads who progress through to the Semi-finals having defeated Aghada and Fr. O’Neills in previous rounds. They now face Castlelyons in the semi-final on Wednesday 2nd September, in Castlelyons at 6:30pm.

Pitch Signage & Advertising Opportunity

As we enter a new decade, we do so with great optimism and excitement here at Watergrasshill GAA Club. Later this decade we will celebrate our centenary year, which will be a special milestone. While its important to celebrate the past and the history of the club, its also important we look forward to the future. With this in mind, the club will shortly be undertaking a development project, to prepare the club for the future and further position ourselves at the centre of our community. Part of this project, will be the development of our existing club grounds. To that end we will endevour to raise a revenue stream from advertising, while giving businesses the opportunity to advertise their services and reach a wider audience within our community. With the playing numbers on the increase our facility will be a busy spot over the coming years and we would love to have your name and business positioned in the hearts and minds of all those who visit on a weekly basis. We are offering advertising space via pitch signage, 3000mm wide x 750mm high. These are a 5 year gloss laminate, flash mounted to 0.2mm skin diabond sign. If you would be interested in this opportunity to advertise and support our club, please contact Claire O Leary on 087-6239297 or any member of the club who can provide assistance.
