Club Returning to Action

Last week saw the much anticipated return of training for the majority of our teams following the prolonged COVID-19 lockdown. Felix Sarsfield Memorial Park was looking fantastic, thanks to the efforts of Charlie Maher who looked after the grounds during lockdown. Before the resumption of activities, a huge amount of behind the scenes work was completed by volunteers and parents alike to ensure not only that all GAA COVID-19 preventative measures and protocols were in place, but that all parents and players had completed their e-learning modules and health check questionnaires. Whilst dressing rooms remain closed and supporters have been replaced by COVID-19 officers & social distancing, everyone is really delighted to be back in action with a reduced & compressed schedule of  games beginning on July 17th. Over the coming weeks efforts will continue to follow the Government, GAA and Department of Health guidelines with respect to COVID-19 protocols. The Club would like to sincerely thank all the members who stepped forward and volunteered to be Covid Supervisors for the various teams, without your help and support the safe return to action for all teams would not be possible. Now looking forward and some dates for the diaries.

Remember, if you’re not in you can’t win.

Pitch Signage & Advertising Opportunity

As we enter a new decade, we do so with great optimism and excitement here at Watergrasshill GAA Club. Later this decade we will celebrate our centenary year, which will be a special milestone. While its important to celebrate the past and the history of the club, its also important we look forward to the future. With this in mind, the club will shortly be undertaking a development project, to prepare the club for the future and further position ourselves at the center of our community. Part of this project, will be the development of our existing club grounds. To that end we will endevour to raise a revenue stream from advertising, while giving businesses the opportunity to advertise their services and reach a wider audience within our community. With the playing numbers on the increase our facility will be a busy spot over the coming years and we would love to have your name and business positioned in the hearts and minds of all those who visit on a weekly basis. We are offering advertising space via pitch signage, 3000mm wide x 750mm high. These are a 5 year gloss laminate, flash mounted to 0.2mm skin diabond sign. If you would be interested in this opportunity to advertise and support our club, please contact Claire O Leary on 087-6239297 or any member of the club who can provide assistance.

Congratulations:

Congratulations to two of our Juvenile players. U11 Tadhg McCarthy and U12 Jack Counihan on winning the recent Sciath na Scol skills competition. Tadhg won the hurling skills competition while Jack from Glenville won the football skills competition. Both boys were a great showcase for the talent we have coming up and the great work been done by Watergrasshill NS and Glenville NS and the Juvenile coaching teams in both GAA clubs. Well done Tadhg & Jack. During the lock-down it was great to see so many of the kids in our parish keeping up their GAA skills and sharing videos on social media, well done to all.

Village Clean Up:

Recently, Watergrasshill GAA were delighted to support Watergrasshill Community Association in the village clean up as part of national spring clean week. Over 50 people took part in the litter pick covering the village, the ring road, the main road to Watergrasshill soccer pitch and down to Ryall’s junction as well as the road to our GAA pitch. Over 60 bags of rubbish were collected. It’s shameful what people are throwing out on the side of the road. Thanks to everyone who helped this morning. Barry Joyce, Juvenile Chairman said the club was delighted to support the Community Association and the clean up. “We mightn’t be playing competitively at the moment but we’re delighted to be playing our part in the community” said Barry.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

There has been a great history of camogie in our Parish for many years with Watergrasshill camogie club formed in 1967. The first meeting took place in the Pinewood in Glenville. As there were a lot of members from Watergrasshill and Glenville, a number of meetings took place to decide on a name for the Club. After a lot of “discussion” it was decided to call the club St. Ita’s. The first officers were: Chairperson: Joan Sheehan (Kearney), Secretary: Noreen O’Reilly (Fitzgerald), Treasurer: Mary O’Leary, Trainer: Donal O’Brien. It wasn’t long before the honors rolled in and in 1969, St. Ita’s (Watergrasshill) were crowned Cork County Junior Champions. Having defeated Glen Rovers, Sarsfields and Kanturk en-route, St. Ita’s (Watergrasshill) qualified to meet Ovens in the County Final where they secured a victory on a score of St. Ita’s 5-0 Ovens 0-1. Match Report: Before a large attendance Watergrasshill ran out winners of the county Junior final played at Riverstown. Watergrasshill went into an early lead with goals by the Ryan sisters Kathleen and Mary. Ovens retaliated with a Noreen Lucey point. The last ten minutes of the first half was most exciting with Ovens doing all the pressing but they were held at bay by a solid Watergrasshill defence that included team Captain Maisie Murphy at centre back, the Higgins sisters and Catherine O’Riordan. Ten minutes after the resumption goals for the Hill by Kathleen Ryan from a 30 and Norah O’Farrell assured them of victory. This was Watergrasshill’s first ever County Title since the club was formed in 1967.

Panel: Helen O’Leary, Catherine O’Riordan, Elizabeth Higgins, Margaret Mackey, Mary Ryan, Kathleen Ryan, Norah O’Farrell, Joan Sheehan, Evelyn Noonan, Maisie Murphy, Margaret Higgins, Norah Higgins, Bernie O’Regan, Angela Higgins.

Celebrating the victory consisted of a Céili at the Pinewood Ballroom on the Sunday night and the following night the cup was borne in triumphant procession through the village.
