Fixtures & Results

Our Juniors played St Ita’s in the Junior A league last Sunday, at a warm and sun-drenched Felix Sarsfield Park. It was a tough competitive and entertaining contest with both teams looking for a victory and league points on the board. The first score of the game went the way of the visitors but it wasn’t long before our lads got off the mark and with a lovely point from play from Tom Dinan. Both teams would register points from placed balls and then the Hill’s third point came in the eighth minute after great work from Aidan Foley, playing full forward, who was very unlucky it didn’t hit the back of the net. St Ita’s would then take control of the scoreboard, in large part helped by some easy frees given up by our lads and also helped by the first goal of the game in the twenty first minute, when a speculative ball was dropped into the Hill square and a St Ita’s forward reacted quickest getting a foot to the sliotar and registering the green flag. After twenty two minutes St. Ita’s led 1-5 to the Hill’s 4pts. From here to the half time whistle there was three points from play, one going the way of the visitors but two to the Hill, Eoin O Reilly getting a nice score and also Aidan Foley after a well won ball in the air and a neatly taken score. The score at halftime, Watergrasshill 5 pts, St Ita’s 1-6. On the resumption of the second half, the Hill had fire in the bellies and took the opening three scores, all from the stick of Aidan Foley (2f). St Ita’s did register a free after 5 minutes but once again the Hill working really hard, got two nice points from play, Willie O Leary and Don O Riordan raising white flags. Mid way through the third quarter, it was all square at 10pts to 1-7. It stayed all square up to the twentieth minute, with further Hill scores coming from a well struck 65 from Colm Fenton, another lovely taken score from play by Tom Dinan and an opportunistic point from Aidan Foley, stealing the sliotar from a St.Itas back and popping over the bar. These scores were cancelled out by frees from St Ita’s, again an indication that loose tackling was costing us of good work elsewhere on the pitch, and they stretched their noses in front with a well taken point from play to lead after twenty minutes 1-11 to our 13pts. Shortly after this we were reduced to 14 men, when Mike Murphy picked up a red card and unfortunately was sent to the line. To our lads credit, the heads didn’t drop, they worked even harder and they matched St Ita’s all over the pitch registering two points from placed balls Colm Fenton & Aidan Foley coolly despatching. St. Ita’s did register a score from play, which started from deep inside their own half when we lost possession in a scoring potion of our own. This left the game nicely poised after twenty six minutes of the second half, the score all square, the Hill 15pts to St Ita’s 1-12. The killer blow came two minutes from time, when St Ita’s scored the games and their second goal. The Hill would register another point in injury time and despite a valiant last few minutes they couldn’t get the crucial goal that would have seen victory, narrowly losing out in the end by two pints on a scoreline of 16pts to St Ita’s 2-12. Hard luck lads, lots of positives to be taken from the game and lessons learned too.

Next up, with little recovery time, is another league game at home against St. James, Wednesday 1st May, throw in 7.30pm, (Result unknown at time of writing)

Juvenile Results:

Our U12s began their league campaign recently with a great win against Killeagh/Ita’s in Watergrasshill, on a score line of 9-7 to 1-2. Right from the start our lads played some fantastic hurling with scores coming from all over the field. Our defence held strong & cleared their lines when asked. We had 16 players on the night each of whom contributed handsomely. Well done lads.

Under 14 Results: It was a tough day at the office for our u14s recently in their North Cork U14 Div 1 clash with Charleville. With the squad depleted due to injuries, illness and absences it was a tough ask against a talented Charleville outfit. Final score of Watergrasshill 0-10 : 8-9 Charleville Both teams were closely matched in the first half, with only 1 point separating the teams with 25 minutes gone. However three unanswered points for Charleville left the Hill trailing by 4 at the break. Charleville started the second half in excellent form and this continued throughout the second half. Unfortunately the lads couldn't maintain their excellent first half showing with Charleville finishing up winning comfortably and as a result have qualified for the league semi-finals.

The lads didn’t have much time to recover and a few days later they were back at it again, this time a home tie against Killara Og, in their final league fixture of the season before the league knockout phase begins. This time out, we were on the right end of the scoreline, Watergrasshill 6-13 (31) Kilara Óg 5-6 (21). The last of the strong wind from Storm Hannah had a significant impact on the game with Watergrasshill playing into the wind in the first half, the score at the break having the Hill trailing by 8 points despite a brace of goals by Donnacha Forde and points from Cian Cronin-O'Neill, Ciarán O'Leary and Liam Foley. The score at half-time Watergrasshill 2-03 (9) to Kilara Og 4-05 (17).The second half had the dream start for The Hill with Sam Dennehy clocking up 1-02 in four minutes, reducing the deficit to three points. This gave the momentum to the Hill and with some great scores by Cian Cronin-O'Neill, Liam Foley, Ciaran O'Leary and Bobby Kelleher, the Hill scored 3-07 without reply. Kilara regrouped, scored a goal and a point but the wind, the momentum and the confidence was with our men and they went on to win by a ten point margin. The lads will be entering the plate competition from here.

National Féile Hurling

The National Féile Hurling competition will be hosted by Cork clubs in June and Watergrasshill GAA is honoured to be a host club. The competition will take place from Friday, June 7 to Sunday, June 9. Martin O'Riordan, Coach to the U14s is the Club lead on the Féile 2019 project. We will be the host club to a Galway club, Connemara's Cois Fharraige (combined Bearna-Na Forbacha Hurling Club agus An Spidéal GAA clubs) who won their Galway final last weekend. Preparations are underway in the club - the parents of some U14 squad members have volunteered to be host families for two or 3 three visiting boys, Garda vetting for host families is in progress (all residents over 16 years of age of a host family must be Garda vetted). A Féile fundraising committee has been organised (to fund Feile gear for a 24 man squad and the cost of entertaining and looking after our guest club) and the enormous amount of paperwork - squad details, registration details, photo permissions, access permissions to pitches etc are underway by Juvenile Runai, Aine O'Leary. A tidy-up and clean-up of the Clubhouse and complex has started. Féile is a great experience for players, coaches and parents. We look forward to being a host club and welcoming the players, coaches and supporters of Cois Fharraige to Watergrasshill in June.

Below is the official photo of the 2019 Feile squad - best of luck lads.
