Fixtures & Results

Goals win games, and that was certainly the case in the 2018 Abernethy Cup Final, played last Friday 5th April, in Castlemartyr where our opponents were Cloyne. The Hill started off with great intent firing over the first score of the game inside the first minute from the stick of Shane O Regan Og but it didn’t take long for our opponents to equalize. The opening quarter was a start stop affair and this was visible on the scoreboard which showed the game all tied after 15 minutes at 6 points a piece. Within this time period, four of these points came from frees which Shane O Regan excellently dispatched, while Cloyne had 3 points from play and 3 frees of their own. The second period of the first half was a little more open but it was Cloyne who pushed themselves into the ascendancy firing over an additional four points and then in the 26th minute scored the first goal of the game to lead the game 1-10 to 6 points. The Hill would add two more points before halftime, one from Padraig O Leary who was extremely unlucky not to rattle the net with his effort and a lovely point from Shane O Regan, which came from a passage of play started back in our full back line and great work by Pa Cronin. At half-time the scoreboard read Cloyne 1-11, Watergrasshill 8 points. The second half resumed with our lads once again showing the fire in the belly, they so often show and we started to claw back the deficit on the scoreboard. After 12 minutes of the second half we had pulled the game back to 1-11 to 12 points. Within this period Shane O Regan struck over a sweet 75 yard free and we were extremely unlucky not to register goals of our own when in the 38thminute, Padraig O Leary rattled the post with the resulting spilled ball going over from Eoin O Reilly. Another goal chance unfortunately went a begging from the penalty spot, when and a good effort from Shane O Regan Og was stopped by the formidable Donal Og Cusack in goal. From then on we battled valiantly but could never got our noses in front. We did have the game back to a point difference in the 46th minute when the scores were 1-12 to 14 points, but two killer blows would follow. Firstly Cloyne struck for their second goal in the 52nd minute of the second half and again four minutes later, which at that stage had us trailing 3-14 to 16 points. Despite never giving up to the final whistle this is how it would stay and we lost out that this occasion 3-14 to 16 points. It was Cloyne’s goals that won it on the day and what if for our lads, and if we had taken some goal chances ourselves. Hard luck lads, onwards and upwards.

The Nursery

Calling all boys, born in 2013 & 2014 (even 2015 if you feel they would like to come and have a go). Our U6's are back in action for 2019 and get together every Saturday @10am in the Watergrasshill GAA pitch and every Wednesday @6pm in Glenville. We have some hurleys and helmets for kids who might want to try it out for a couple of weeks. Its €2 per child/family every training. For more information please contact Liam on 0867992132 or Noel on 0872479045. I would encourage all parents of boys in this age group to bring them along. Its great fun, they learn new skills, learn to be part of a team and they make friends for life. We would also love to see any parents willing to give a hand in any way they can, to come forward. It would be greatly appreciated and who knows you might make new friends along the way too. Hope to see you there.

Cul Camp 2019

Our Summer Cul Camp will take place this year from Monday 15th July. Please note, there will be NO on-line bookings this year but rather a registration evening, date and time to be confirmed. Bring on the summer!

Hard Luck

Hard luck to Glenville Intermediate Footballers who narrowly missed out on an opening day championship win against Mayfield. The final score was Mayfield 1-15, Glenville 2-9. Mayfield were a more seasoned outfit with Glenville having a lot of new faces this year. However, after a very slow start Glenvilles overall performance was good particularly with so many new young faces playing championship. It augers well later on in the year when championship resumes. Well done players and management and best of luck for the rest of the season.

Calling on The Hill Diaspora

Have you family or friends who once upon a time played GAA in the Hill but now live in some far flung corner of the world, like Australia or Leitrim? If you know of someone I’d love to get in touch (you can direct message through the club FaceBook page or drop me an e-mail topro.watergrasshill.cork@gaa.ie ) to hear their story (if you don't mind sharing) and maybe bring them back closer to family and friends still living here in Watergrasshill. Keep an eye out in the club notes (posted on our club social media channels) in the coming weeks for some of our former club member's stories!

Upcoming Events:
