Watergrasshill U14s qualify for Féile semi-finals.

Congratulations to the U14 squad, who qualified today for the Feile Semi-finals along with Fermoy, Kinsale and Ibane Gaels or St. Colm's (likely to be held on Friday, April 27).
The qualifying round took place today in Fr O’Neill’s Ballymacoda in wonderful sunny conditions. We were scheduled to play three teams – St Catherine’s, Fr. O’Neill’s and Kilara Óg, but Kilara Óg withdrew, so we had two games of 15 minutes a side.
Our first game was against St. Catherine’s. We opened with a quick goal and built on this. Half-time Watergrasshill led 1-05 to 0-01. The second half was building on the first-half lead and both sides scored exactly the same amount of scores as they did in the first half. The game ended Watergrasshill 2-10 St Catherine’s 0-02.
Our second game was scheduled for 10 minutes after our first game, which left very little time to settle, rehydrate in the heat and refocus. We faced a fresh Fr. O’Neill’s team and this game was much tighter. Half-time Watergrasshill led by three points, 1-04 Fr O’Neill’s 1-01. The second half was a low scoring very intense period. Fr O’Neill’s pulled back two points without reply and then with one minute of normal time remaining, were awarded a free and converted to level the game at 1-04 to 1-04.
With no idea of what additional time was to be played, Watergrasshill immediately launched a drive to reclaim the lead and pushed up the field with intensity and were rewarded with a free. Brendan Lehane, who played a hugely significant part in both games, stepped up to take it. Showing absolutely no nerves, he focussed and calmly put the sliotar over the bar to put Watergrasshill back in the lead 1-05 to 1-04. With just 40 seconds of additional time played, the referee blew the final whistle and with Watergrasshill, having won their two games in a pool of three teams, knew they had achieved their place in the Féile Semi-finals and great celebrations broke out on the final whistle.
Congrats to the squad who worked so hard and the coaches who prepared the team so well for the day.
