Minor hurling League WghVs St Catherines

Final Score Watergrasshill 2-17 to St Catherines1-11

A win and two points on the board in the first league game.  A great team display with no less than 9 players on the score sheet. It took time for our lads to settle into the game as St Catherines started strongest getting a few early points. Scores from Aaron Collins & Denis O Farrell and not to mention Aaron Ricken helped even the teams up. However the home team provided the first goal of the night gaining the upper hand before half time. The Hill boys defended well , moving the ball up the field into the hands of Thomas Dinanto leave the scores level at half time , 0-10 to 1-07.

The second half saw the Hill start the stronger team of the two. Conor O Leary & David O Flynn working well attacking the opposition and creating scores up the field. Along came our two goals from the Hurls of Substitution Andrew Dorgan &Paudie Cotter which gave us the advantage we needed to see out the game. Two long range points from Colm Fenton & Aaron Collins left the score with a win for the hill at the final whistle.

Intermediate Hurling Wgh Vs Valley Rovers

Final Score: Watergrasshill 0-06 to Valley Rovers 1-15

A first defeat in the league for this team. The Hill were missing players due to injuries and the U21 Championship the night before, it was going to be a hard game to win against a strong Valley Rovers. The visitors took an early lead of 4points . Denis O Farrell got the Hill on the score board with a point, however Valley Rovers retaliated with a goal, to make the task harder  for the lads. Points from Paddy O Regan, Paudie Cahill &Darragh O Callaghan left the score at the break 1-08 to 0.04 to valleys advantage.

The second half saw a good spirited performance from the Hill but unfortunately it did not show on the score board. With the pitch conditions heavy , there was no flow to the game against this strong and physical team. Match report Under 16 hurling WatergrasshillVsWhitechurch

Final Score Watergrasshill 1-10 to Whitechurch 0.7

Watergrasshill began their under 16 hurling league campaign with a win at home against Whitechurch on Monday April 7. Midfielder Thomas Dinan was quick to influence the game and had the games opening 2 points in the second and eight minutes. Next up was Aaron Collins with 2 points, one from play and one from a placed ball. The game took a decisive twist in Watergrasshill’s  favour on twenty one minutes when Luke McCarthy took on the Whitechurch defence and offloaded to Andrew Dorgan who was running in support and his strong shot rattled the net. Whitechurch got some reward for their efforts with a point in the twenty third minute. Aaron Collins completed the first half scoring with two pointed frees to leave the half time score Watergrasshill 1 – 6, Whitechurch 0 – 1. After Aaron Collins had the first score of the second half with a point after two minutes, Whitechurch imposed themselves on the game and their forceful play saw them run up three points on the trot without reply. Improving play from the ‘Hill saw them reassert themselves and both sides had a further three points for the remainder of the half with Cathal Maloney and Aaron Collins raising white flags for the ‘Hill. The Final score read Watergrasshill 1 – 10 Whitechurch 0 – 7. Watergrashill’s next fixture sees them away to Lisgoold on Friday April 11.

U12 Rebel Og East A hurling League Watergrasshill V Whitechurch

Final Score: Whitechurch 5-6 Watergrasshill 2-4

We played our first game in the 12 A league on Saturday 5th April at home verses Whitechurch in wet conditions. The Hill got off to a great start playing against the wind when Colin o Keeffe showed his goal poaching instincts when scoring a goal after only two minutes. Whitechurch responded by scoring a goal and a point. The Hill players showed great effort and were rewarded with a fine goal from Eoin Fitzgerald and we went further ahead with a point from a free from Cathal Fitzgerald. This left the half time score 2-1 to 1-1 in our favour.

Turning to play against the wind Whitechurch upped the tempo of the game and scored 1- 4 without reply, the Hill responded with two points from Cathal Fitzgerald and Eoinfoley.

At this stage the hill seemed to have run out of steam after putting in a huge effort in the first half, Whitechurch added a further 3-1 to put the game out of reach. The Hill finished with a further point from Eoin Foley who tried his heart out all day.

At the end we were beaten by the better team but the lads can hold their heads up after putting a battling performance.

Book Launch

A history of Gaelic games in Watergrasshill/ Glenville parish will be launched on the 25th of April.

This book chronicles Gaelic games in the parish from 1885 to 2012. It includes chapters on  hurling, football, camogie, ladies football and Scor along with  many other items of GAA  and social interest. It also reproduces many photographs of teams and club members  perhaps not seen before.

Putting such a book on the market was a huge task for the authors and the research involved was extensive. A large number of club members were interviewed and these pieces provide a perspective on both their history in the game and its influence on themselves and the wider community

The history has been written by four club members, Danny O Farrell, Siobhain Curtin, Jerry Mackey and Frank Halbert.

The book will be launched by Eamon Ryan at 8.00pm in the MidletonPark  Friday 25th of April

Any reports , fixtures or results can be emailed to pro.watergrasshill.cork@gaa.ie no later than 9pm on Monday evening. Please promote your team  and give credit where credit is due.
