Féile Round-Up

Our under 15 boys headed to Cloyne on Saturday morning for the East Cork, D1 Féile qualifiers. With Fermoy withdrawing, the original 2 groups of 3 teams format was changed to a single group of 5 teams, each team playing 4 games. With St. Colman’s, Bride Rovers, Youghal and St. Catherine’s to play, it was a busy morning. The volunteers at Cloyne GAA had a super set-up and are to be commended for the organisation and hosting of the event, not to mention the tea, coffee and treats laid on for all in attendance, it was greatly appreciated.

On field action for the ‘hill boys started with a titanic tussle against hosts St. Colman’s. 1st game for each team and given the short 15 minutes a side format for Féile, there’s no time to waste. This was a super contest and was fast & competitive from the off. Goals from David Barry and Tadgh McCarthy saw Watergrasshill win on a score line of St. Colman’s 1-09 2-07 Watergrasshill. Next up for the boys were Youghal, who themselves had just come from a defeat to St. Catherine’s. As the fog rolled in from the sea and visibility deteriorated, it seemed both teams were content to take goals rather than points. Watergrasshill coming out on top Youghal 3-02 4-02 Watergrasshill. At this stage with 3 rounds of games played, St. Colman’s, St. Catherine’s and Watergrasshill were all level on 4 points, but Watergrasshill had only played 2 games and were undefeated so far. Next up were neighbours Bride Rovers. Despite the form book whereby Rovers had yet to register a win and the hill were undefeated, this was a nail-biting affair. At just 0-2 each at half-time, this was always going to be decided by small margins & it was Jack Counihan who provided those margins with accuracy from placed balls and a superb winning point from play. And so, onto their final game against St. Catherine’s – the hill boys had it in their own hands. This was another fast paced game and one point Watergrasshill had stretched to a 7 point lead, but St. Catherine’s to their credit never gave up and responded with 2 rapid fire goals to take the game back to a single point with just 4 minutes on the clock. However, the ‘hill never dropped their intensity and powered into the closing period, responding to the concession of 2 goals with 1-1 in the blink of an eye courtesy of Tadgh and Jack. And so to scenes of great jubilation, Watergrasshill won out on a score line of Watergrasshill 3-05 2-04 St. Catherine’s. And so it was on to Blarney on Monday evening to face Valley Rovers in the Semi-Final.

This was another tight affair, but the ‘hill boys settled well against what looked to be a much physically bigger Valley Rovers outfit. It was over and back, with the hill twice taking a 2 point lead in the first half and Valley’s pegging us back. At the break it was 0-5 each and there was nothing between the teams and it was beginning to look like a single score would decide this game. The 2nd half continued in the same vein as the 1st with the ‘hill twice going a score ahead and Valley’s drawing level. However, having gone ahead again on 11 2nd half minutes, Valley’s got the only goal of the game on 12 minutes to go 2 up for the first time in the match. We pulled on back but the ref sounded the full-time whistle before an equalizer could be found. And so, Valley Rovers progressed to the final on a score line of Watergrasshill 0-8 1-7 Valley Rovers. Cloughduv won the resulting final and took the Cork Division 1, Féile 3 title for 2023 and we wish them well in the national Féile finals in Connaught GAA Center Of Excellence in July.

Everyone at the club are super proud of this group of lads who continue to work so hard. They had a super weekend and we congratulate them, their families and of course their trainers who continue to guide them along the way.

Darkness into Light

The club are delighted to support our community again this year for the Darkness Into Light walk on Saturday May 6th. Darkness into light are community based activities, typically organised in and around dawn, symbolising the continuity of the sunrise and the emergence from darkness into light. DIL is a fundraiser for Pieta who provide support to individuals, families and communities show have been affected by suicide. But it is also a chance for a community to come together and show support to those in our community who may themselves be experiencing dark or difficult times.

The walk will begin at Watergrasshill GAA grounds at 4:15am on Saturday 6th May. We will start off at Watergrasshill GAA pitch and walk up in front of Glenn Corrin housing estate turning left towards Meadow Court.  Proceed over the first bridge, right at roundabout, right at second roundabout, over the second bridge pass the national school. We will cross at the pedestrian crossing and head through Priory Court, exiting at McCarthy’s Volvo and crossing into Ard Cashel. Through Ard Cashel, exiting at centra, turning left and on down to the GAA pitch where you will be welcomed with a surprise and some light refreshments and snacks will be served. Let’s come together and make this a special occasion and show support to our community and to those who have experienced or are going through tough times.
