Action Round-Up

U18 East Cork D1 Hurling

Watergrasshill 2-15 (21) Fr O’Neill’s 2-12 (18)

It was certainly a match of two halves in Watergrasshill on Good Friday with a great game of hurling served up by both sides.

The Hill chose to play with a very strong wind in the first half, playing towards the clubhouse.

The decision proved to be the right one, with the Hill scoring 1-14 (all from play bar one point from a free) to Fr O’Neill’s 1-2. Liam Foley was on fire, scoring 6 points in the first half from play, most from really difficult angles but Liam made it look easy with his characteristic no effort style of play. Cian Cronin-O’Neill also had an exceptional first half scoring 1-3 (one point from a free). Bobby Kelleher added three points from play with a point each from Mick O’Driscoll and Ciarán Linehan.

The second half saw Fr O’Neill’s with the strong wind advantage and with renewed vigor, they launched into the game, reducing the Hill’s opportunity to score. Fr O’Neill’s scored 1-10 in the second half with 5 of the points coming from frees. Watergrasshill only scored twice in the second half (a goal from Ciarán Linehan and a point from a free from Cian Cronin-O’Neill)

With six minutes of added time, it was a tense one goal game for the last 8 minutes, but Watergrasshill withheld the pressure and saw the game out, winning on a score line of 2-15 to 2-12.

Watergrasshill (2) 0-6 V 0-4 Ballincollig (2)

Watergrasshill hosted the Ballincollig U12 Hurling team on Easter Monday in an intense encounter. Both teams showed great skills, bravery, and commitment throughout the game.

The match began with a brilliant display of skills from Watergrasshill's Donncha Carol and Sean Dunlea who were putting great pressure on Ballincollig's defenders. Jack O'Sullivan also contributed with his precise passing skills that created opportunities for the team to score a few early points.

However, Ballincollig made some excellent plays that prevented Watergrasshill from taking a further lead. Nevertheless, Watergrasshill's Abiageal Fenton made a magnificent goal-line clearance that kept the team in the lead. It was a tense game where both teams showed a stout defense, especially Watergrasshill's Diarmuid Dara, who repeatedly nullified the Ballincollig attacks. Joe Connolly, the captain of the night, displayed great leadership that motivated the team, and they continued to take the game to the opposition.

The match finished with Watergrasshill securing a 2 point win helped by great teamwork and some super individual performances. It was a great team performance centered on great skills, bravery, and commitment, Both teams displayed great sportsmanship, and we congratulate Ballincollig on a hard-fought game.

Rebel Óg East, Fé12 League Group 2

Na Piarsaigh 0-2 Watergrasshill 1-12

A good win away from home in our first league game of the season. The lads started the game on the front foot, winning the 50/50 balls and moving the ball fast into the forward line with Cian Murphy 0-1 and Danny Murphy 1-0 scoring from the resulting hard work out the field & Cormac McCarthy getting scores from both play & placed balls. The second half playing against the breeze the lads defended as a unit and kept Na Piarsaigh to scoring only a 1 point in both halves. With Darragh Noonan, James McDermott & Alex Downey solid at the back and with the 2 O’Leary’s in Sam & Robbie working hard in midfield the Hill were always in control of this game. So well done to all involved many thanks to Na Piarsaigh for the sporting game and looking forward to the next game.

2023 Membership now due

Our 2023 club membership is now due and we would encourage everyone to renew as soon as possible. Our playing, non-playing and social membership options are available again this year. It’s not just important for players to complete their membership for insurance and registration purposes, but social and non-playing members are just as important to ensure we have up to date member numbers, this help with Capital grant applications to GAA organisations and external private funding to help us continue to develop the best possible facilities for our community.

This year we have simplified the registration process by moving to the Foireann platform, which is provided by the GAA. Everyone will already have profiles set-up on Foireann from the days of COVID health questionnaires, but anyone who needs extra support to resister can just contact any club officer and we’ll gladly help you out.
