Remembering a successful 2022

Last Friday, we had a great evening in Kade’s Kounty, Glenville when we had our annual medal presentation function. There was great excitement in the room as former Cork Footballer Tomás Clancy presented the medals to all of the successful teams from both Watergrasshill and Glenville in 2022. In his opening address, Watergrasshill Underage Chairperson Barry Joyce, congratulated the players on a successful year. He also thanked the players’ parents for all of their support and also thanked the volunteers in the club who coach, support and help with administration behind the scenes, without whose generosity of time, the club could not function.

There was also a special presentation from Barry Joyce on behalf of the club to Mags, Joe and Josh O’Callaghan. The proceeds of our Annual Puc Fada were donated to the Ronal McDonald House charities in Crumlin. That particular charity has been a great support to the O’Callaghan’s over the past number of years and the club were delighted to make a donation in recognition of that support. From a Watergrasshill perspective, we had presentations to our U-11 (Watergrasshill Invitational Tournament), U-13 (East Cork D1 Shield), U-15 (East Cork League & D2 Championship) and U-17 (East Cork D1 Championship) teams. Whilst the boys also accepted football medals for U-11 (John Kerin’s Tournament), U-12 (East Cork League Shield), U-14 (North Cork D1 Championship Shield, U-15 (East Cork D2 League Shield) and U-16 (East Cork D2 Championship). Whilst it is always good to receive the recognition of medals at the end of a long season, it was also great to see the increase in player retention throughout the year which is testament to the friendships and enjoyment of the game and credit to the coaches for their hard work on that front. We look forward to another successful year both on and of the pitch in 2023 and I hope to be penning another such update this time next year.

2023 Membership opening soon

Our 2023 club membership will be opening soon and we would encourage everyone to renew as soon as possible. Our playing, non-playing and social membership options will be available again this year. It’s not just important for players to complete their membership for insurance and registration purposes, but social and non-playing members are just as important to ensure we have up to date member numbers, this help with Capital grant applications to GAA organisations and external private funding to help us continue to develop the best possible facilities for our community.

Looking ahead to 2023 Intermediate Hurling campaign

Our Intermediate hurlers will kick off their 2023 Red FM League campaign on March 5th with an away trip to All-Ireland Junior champions Ballygiblin. After a slow start to the league campaign last year, we dropped to D5 this year and will also face Castlemartyr (19th March – Home), Cloughduv (2nd April – Away), Midleton (16th April – Home), Dungourney (30th April – Away), Argideen Rangers (14th May – Home), Mayfield (28th May – Home) our old friends from Aghada on March 19th in Aghada and finally Russell Rovers on June 25th at home.

Shortly after they will start the Premier Intermediate Championship campaign in Group C facing Kilworth (August 4th – Rathcormac), Ballinhassig (August 12th – Riverstown) and Castlemartyr (September 3rd – Lisgoold). Whilst there has been much debate about the split season, it must be said that there’s credit due to the Cork County board who have the master fixture schedule fixed for the year ahead. This will not only give certainty to players in terms of balancing their playing load but also allows them plan for holidays, study and work etc. which is welcome all round. We wish the Intermediates the very best of luck in 2023, they were unlucky not to progress from the group stage last year and went un-defeated, hopefully this year Pat Heffernan can drive them on again and go one better.
