Lotto Winner

As we reported last week, we were delighted to finally have another lotto jackpot winner, the first jackpot winner since John Murphy from Bartlemy collected his cheque for €19,600 in January 2020. Similar to many other clubs across the country, our Lotto is one of the main sources of income for the club and every cent contributed goes back into the club to fund running the club at all levels. We are extremely grateful to everyone who supports our lotto, be it on-line, through weekly tickets or through annual tickets.

This week Brian O’Riordan picked up his jackpot winners’ cheque for €12,900, presented by club chairman Kieran O’Keeffe. Brian is a Watergrasshill native, who now currently resides in Naas, Co. Kildare. Brian is a long-time member and supporter of the club and still supports our Lotto through annual tickets. Congratulations again to Brian and thank you for your continued support of Watergrasshill GAA.

Results round-up

It was a relatively quiet week on the hurling front as last weekend was primarily a football weekend. There were however, 3 games down for decision this past week.

1st up was our U-19 team who hosted Passage West last Wednesday evening. Our lads came out on top winning on a score line of 1-13 to 0-10. A good solid result for the lads, who now have 2 wins from 3 games. The revised structure with minor dropping to U-17 and the abolition of the U-21 grade in favour of U-19 has been the subject of much debate and it’s fair to say the jury is currently out as to whether the current structure will be successful. Player retention between the ages of 17 to 20 is critically important, especially for many rural clubs to ensure a playing pathway to our adult teams. Meaningful playing time for players in that cohort is important and the current practice of bigger clubs using the U-17C grade to get game time for their U-16 Premier players appears to be counter-productive.

Next up were our intermediates, who lost out to Courcey Rovers on a score line of 0-15 to 1-16 on Thursday evening in Watergrasshill. It’s been a difficult start to the league campaign for the lads, but there are promising signs & no shortage of hard work, we’re sure they’ll turn a corner in the coming weeks.

Finally, our U-12 boys had a comprehensive win over St. Colmcille’s on Monday evening. It’s great to see this group thriving in their first year out of Go-games. Their teamwork, skill and hard work are evident, and we wish them well for the remainder of the season.

Equipment Re-cycling drive

Our equipment recycling continues to be a fantastic success and we would like to thank everyone who has contributed thus far.

With so many new families in the parish and in an effort to minimise the cost of getting started and maximise accessibility to hurling, we are asking that if anyone has hurleys or helmets which they no longer use, that they be dropped to the clubrooms where our drop boxes will be located.

The clubrooms will be open every Saturday morning between 10am and 1pm where we will have a “home for hurleys” and a “helmet hub” where items may be dropped for re-use.

We will ensure that all equipment is fully sanitised before re-distribution and make sure that no child goes without.

This initiative will primarily benefit our juvenile club by providing affordable access to equipment and who knows, maybe unearthing the next Daire O’Leary from our underage academy.

Text Service Re-launch

This year we are re-launching our supporters text messaging service as another way to keep members up-to-date with upcoming fixtures.

If you would like a weekly supporter’s message with fixtures for Watergrasshill & Glenville hurling, football, camogie and ladies football matches please contact Paud O'Neill 0879890964 or Barry Joyce 0871847017.

There is a nominal fee of €5 per year for this service.

We would also appreciate if members could share this service with those who are not on social media as we have found in previous years that this service is very beneficial for them.

Lotto

There was no winner of the Lotto Jackpot this week. Numbers drawn were 6, 9, 20 & 21. Lucky dip winners are Nora Reidy, Paud O’Neill, Don O’Riordan & Matthew Geany. Congrats to you all. Next week's jackpot is €1,700 and draw will take place Monday 16th March. Tickets are on sale in some of the village businesses like The Hut Bar, The Fir Tree, Johnny's Shop and our new Lotto stand in Ross's Centra. Tickets can also be purchased on-line via our club website (www.watergrasshillgaa.ie). The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members and supporters of the Watergrasshill GAA Club Lotto. The Club Lotto is a vital source of income for the running of all our teams within the Club and for future development of our facilities, so we ask you to please support it if you are in a position to do so. Remember, if you’re not in you can’t win.
