East Cork Scór

A massive well done to our members who participated in Scór Na bPáistí, East Cork Semi-Finals last weekend in Lisgoold.

We had Sam O'Leary, Tom Fennell, Jessica Foley & Christopher Reponen in Tráth Na gCeist and Ava Warren in Amhránaíocht Aonair.

Scór Na bPáisti is an important cultural part of our clubs, championed through the years by our president Lizzie O'Leary and now through our cultural officer Aisling Fitzgerald.

A great day was had by all and although our teams were unlucky not to progress, it was certainly heart-warming to see that on and off the field, our Gaelic heritage is alive and well, especially through the efforts of so many young people. Reminder too to save the date for May 8th when the East Cork finals will be held in Watergrasshill community hall.

The boys in Red & White

A quick mention to some of our members who also represented Watergrasshill in the Red & White of Cork over the past number of days.

We had Gearóid Fitzgerald playing primary games before the Munster SHC game V Clare in Semple Stadium representing Glenville NS. A great honour for Gearóid & his family of which we’re all very proud.

We also have Liam Foley and Mick O’Driscoll as part of the Cork Minor Hurling panel who are facing Clare on Tuesday evening in the Munster Minor Hurling Championship Semi Final. Massive congratulations to the lads who have been great ambassadors for the parish for many years now.

And finally we had Dáire O’Leary for the Cork U-20 team who narrowly lost out to Tipperary in the Munster U-20 semi-final. It’s been a stop – start season for Dáire with a few injuries, but we have no doubt that he will overcome those challenges in the near future, such is the outstanding character of the man. Dáire is as dedicated a person as you’ll ever meet, a true gent who’s honesty of effort and dedication to his craft makes him an outstanding prospect for Cork hurling & of whom the entire club are very proud.

Underage Academy return

A reminder that our U-6 academy is back since early April and new members are always welcome. If you are new to Watergrasshill or have boys born in 2016 or 2017 who would like to give it a try - please reach out to Paud (087-9890964) or Don (083-8497719) or just come along on Saturday morning and give it a go. The boys play hurling & football together with an emphasis on fun, friendship & lots of laughs.

Everyone is welcome so come along and give it a go. The academy is one of the big beneficiaries of our equipment recycling drive, which aims to make our games more accessible for new families, so your support is greatly appreciated.

Equipment Re-cycling drive

Our equipment recycling drive kicked off in April and there has already been a fantastic response.

With so many new families in the parish and in an effort to minimise the cost of getting started and maximise accessibility to hurling, we are asking that if anyone has hurleys or helmets which they no longer use, that they be dropped to the clubrooms where our drop boxes will be located.

The clubrooms will be open every Saturday morning between 10am and 1pm where we will have a “home for hurleys” and a “helmet hub” where items may be dropped for re-use.

We will ensure that all equipment is fully sanitised before re-distribution and make sure that no child goes without.

This initiative will primarily benefit our juvenile club by providing affordable access to equipment and who knows, maybe unearthing the next Daire O’Leary from our underage academy.

Lotto

There was no winner of this week’s lotto draw following the weekly draw held in the Hut Bar on 2nd May, numbers drawn were 10, 24, 25 & 27. Lucky dip winners are Rob Knapp, TJ Forde, Michael Rowe and Tommy Bowe - congrats to you all. Next week's jackpot is €1600 and draw will take place Monday 9th May. Tickets are on sale in some of the village businesses like The Hut Bar, The Fir Tree, Johnny's Shop and our new Lotto stand in Ross's Centra. Tickets can also be purchased on-line via our club website (www.watergrasshillgaa.ie). The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members and supporters of the Watergrasshill GAA Club Lotto. The Club Lotto is a vital source of income for the running of all our teams within the Club and for future development of our facilities, so we ask you to please support it if you are in a position to do so. Remember, if you’re not in you can’t win.
