Narrow Margins
Our Fé-15 boys made the trip to Mourneabbey last weekend for their Féile qualification games. They played in Group 1 Section A along with Clyda Rovers and Charleville. In total there were 6 groups, comprising 20 teams with groups 2, 3 and 4 playing in Mayfield, Coachford and Ahiohill respectively. A quirk of the number of teams meant that our lads only had 2 games in a 3-team group which made it difficult from the start as only the group winners would progress.
They opened their day with a game against Charleville. With games lasting 15 mins per side, the adage of goals win games is apt for féile but a very strong wind meant that long range shooting was also an options for both teams.
Our boys settled very well in the opening half against Charleville. Some great work by Mike O’Riordan, Tadgh McCarthy and Darragh O’Neill at the back meant we held a slender lead at the break. The boy really pushed on in the second half and ran out winners on a score line of Charleville 2-3 V 6-7 Watergrasshill.
The second game against Clyda was a much closer affair. Playing into the breeze in the first half, our boys opened quickly with a goal inside for first 3 minutes. From that point on, Clyda came into their own, adding 7 unanswered points using the breeze to full advantage. At half-time the score was 0-7 to 1-0 in Clyda’s favour, but with the aid of the breeze in the second half, there was no need to panic just yet. The lads dug in for the second half and tied the game adding a goal and a point to their tally without reply. In a tense closing few minutes, Clyda managed to add the winning point and take the victory by the narrowest of margins.
Well done to the boys on battling until the very end and although they didn’t progress, there are definitely brighter days ahead for this talented group.
Best wishes also to team captain David Barry who missed out on Féile due to a nasty injury pick up on last Thursday evening – get well soon David.
Rebel Óg Round-Up
Across the Rebel Óg games, our Fé-15 boys got last week week off to a good start by beating Cobh 1-14 to 6-10 in Cobh, that was followed by our Fé-17c team also had their first win of their campaign overcoming Kiltha Óg 2-10 to 3-10 last Thursday evening in Dungourney. Our Fé-14 boys completed a good week on the Rebel Óg front by defeating neighbours Bride Rovers in the 13-a-side grading league 4-13 to 1-8 last Friday evening in Watergrasshill.
Equipment Re-cycling drive
Our equipment recycling drive kicked off in April and there has already been a fantastic response.
With so many new families in the parish and in an effort to minimise the cost of getting started and maximise accessibility to hurling, we are asking that if anyone has hurleys or helmets which they no longer use, that they be dropped to the clubrooms where our drop boxes will be located.
The clubrooms will be open every Saturday morning between 10am and 1pm where we will have a “home for hurleys” and a “helmet hub” where items may be dropped for re-use.
We will ensure that all equipment is fully sanitised before re-distribution and make sure that no child goes without.
This initiative will primarily benefit our juvenile club by providing affordable access to equipment and who knows, maybe unearthing the next Daire O’Leary from our underage academy.
Pitch Signage & Advertising Opportunity
As we enter a new decade, we do so with great optimism and excitement here at Watergrasshill GAA Club. Later this decade we will celebrate our centenary year, which will be a special milestone. While it's important to celebrate the past and the history of the club, it’s also important we look forward to the future. With this in mind, the club will shortly be undertaking a development project, to prepare the club for the future and further position ourselves at the center of our community. Part of this project will be the development of our existing club grounds. To that end we will endeavour to raise a revenue stream from advertising, while giving businesses the opportunity to advertise their services and reach a wider audience within our community. With the playing numbers on the increase our facility will be a busy spot over the coming years, and we would love to have your name and business positioned in the hearts and minds of all those who visit on a weekly basis. We are offering advertising space via pitch signage, 3000mm wide x 750mm high. These are a 5-year gloss laminate, flash mounted to 0.2mm skin diabond sign. If you would be interested in this opportunity to advertise and support our club, please contact Claire O Leary on 087-6239297 or any member of the club who can help.
