Throwback Thursday - Intermediate Hurling 1975–80

After winning the Junior County in 1974, Watergrasshill were promoted to the Intermediate grade for the first time. In 1975, they came up against Newtownshandrum in the first round. This game was played in Castletownroche and after a tough battle Newtown pulled away to win in the last fifteen minutes.  The loss of a few young players coupled with a few retirements proved difficult for the club. Nevertheless, the club regrouped with players emerging from the underage ranks.  In 1976 they were defeated by Passage at Church Road in the first round of the Championship.  The Hill qualified for the league Semi-final in 1977 with victories over Ballinhassig, Ballyhea, Newcestown, Newtownshandrum and Blackrock only to lose to Ballinhassig in the knockout stages.  In 1978 they reached the Semi-final of the championship and in 1979 they won the Liam Breathnach Cup.

Next week's jackpot is a cool €5,400 and draw will take place Monday 11th October. Tickets are now once again on sale in some of the village businesses,  like Centra & Johnny's Shop. Tickets can also be purchased on-line via our club website (www.watergrasshillgaa.ie). The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members and supporters of the Watergrasshill GAA Club Lotto. The Club Lotto is a vital source of income for the running of all our teams within the Club and for future development of our facilities, so we ask you to please support it if you are in a position to do so. Remember, if you’re not in you can’t win.

AGM

It will soon be that time of year when the Club AGM comes around. Given the current situation, it is highly unlikely that we will be able to host a physical AGM this year, therefore, in keeping with Croke Park guidelines, we will host an “incorporeal” AGM on Sunday 29th November at 2.30pm. So, what does this mean? Each member will receive an email, containing the various reports from the year and any questions or queries are to be sent to the Secretary within a week of this date. The Executive will then have a two-week period to respond. The guidance from Croke Park is, where possible, current Club Officers hold their positions for a further 12 months. We will however accept nominations for Officers for 2021, from members, should there be any you wish to make. The Club appreciates this is unprecedented, we do however have to take the safety of all members into account and act in accordance with the guidance from Croke Park. More information will be sent to Club members in due course.

Calling on The Hill Diaspora

Have you family or friends who once upon a time played GAA in the Hill but now live in some far-flung corner of the world, like Australia or Leitrim? If you know of someone I’d love to get in touch (you can direct message through the club FaceBook page or drop me an e-mail to pro.watergrasshill.cork@gaa.ie ) to hear their story (if you don't mind sharing) and maybe bring them back closer to family and friends still living here in Watergrasshill.
