Intermediates into Championship Quarter Finals

It’s been a great run so far in this year's Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship by our Intermediate team. Three wins from three and narrowly missing out on a straight semi-final place on scoring difference, now puts us into a quarterfinal where our opponents will be Courcey Rovers. On Friday night last we played our final group game against a very determined and well organised Valley Rovers outfit. We got off to a great start with a well-taken pointed effort from Shane O’Regan. This was followed up through scores by Daire O’Leary, Shane Óg O’Regan and Brian Fenton, that put us six points in front after just nine minutes played on the clock. However, Valley Rovers, got organised and opened their scoring account through a free by Cork senior hurler Chris O’Leary. They built on this and hit a purple patch on the scoreboard that meant the scores were level at 0-6 apiece in the 28th minute. Shortly after this they were dealt a blow when they were reduced to fourteen men and it looked like the game had swung back towards the Hill. We led at the break, after two late points courtesy of Shane O’Regan and Anthony Cronin. On resumption of the second half, it was clear fourteen-man Valley Rovers were up for the fight and began well in the second half. Further scores put them 0-11 to 0-10 ahead after 38 minutes. But Watergrasshill responded well through a well-taken Kevin O’Neill effort. The teams exchanged scores in the finishing stretch, with one fantastic long-range point from Gary Kelly Lynch. Just when it looked as though the spoils were to be shared, we pounced for a late winner through an Aidan Foley effort on the turn. This left the scoreboard on the final whistle read Watergrasshill 0-18 Valley Rovers 0-17.

Scorers for Watergrasshill: S O’Regan (0-4f) 0-5, D O’Leary 0-4, S Óg O’Regan 0-3, A Cronin 0-2, G Kelly Lynch, B Fenton, K O’Neill, A Foley 0-1 each.

WATERGRASSHILL: D O’Callaghan; K O’Keeffe, A Ricken, S Field; P Cronin, G Kelly Lynch, B Fenton; A Cronin, P O’Regan; D Dennehy, K O’Neill, S O’Regan; D O’Leary, S Óg O’Regan, P O’Leary.

Subs: A Foley for O’Regan (50), O Desmond for Dennehy, E Barry for O’Leary (both 55).

Congrats to manager Willie O' Leary, his management team and of course the panel of players who have given us three exciting games so far this year. Three more wins lads and it’s the promised land.

Juvenile Update

Rebel Óg Mid Fé 12 Hurling Group 1 Plate - Final

Watergrasshill 3-14 Valley Rovers 2-03

Having had a slow to start to their campaign post lock-down, our Under 12 hurlers and footballers have put in some sterling performances over the past three weeks culminating in victory in the Rebel Óg Mid Fé 12 Hurling Group 1 plate at chilly but sunny Watergrasshill on Saturday morning. Playing against the wind in the first half, the boys lead from start to finish and but for some terrific goalkeeping would have went in with more than a four point ahead at half time.

With the aid of the breeze in the second half, the boys continued to work hard and pulled away to win comfortably in the end. Captain, David Barry, accepted the trophy on behalf of delighted teammates. Well done to the lads on sticking together through a tough campaign and a big Thank You to the coaches and indeed the parents for supporting the lads throughout.

Panel: Leon Clarke O’Shea, Conor Webb Duggan, Sean Callinan, Liam Kelleher, Dara O’Neill, Jack Counihan, Adam Casey, Tadhg McCarthy, Eoghan Forde, Jayden Hennebry, David Barry, Daniel O’Connor, Ryan Kavanagh, Donacha O’Leary, Dylan McCarthy, Jack Long, Darragh Murphy, Zach Curtin, John Kelleher, Louie Guichard, Cillian O’Connor, Josh Madden, Gearoid Fitzgerald.

Rebel Óg East Fé 16 Hurling League Division 1 – Semi-Final

Watergrasshill 5-17 Killeagh/Ita’s 2-9

Our U-16’s capped off a great weekend for the club by progressing to the final of the Rebel Óg East Fé 16 Hurling League Division 1 by defeating a fancied Killeagh/Ita’s side in Watergrasshill on Sunday evening. Watergrasshill were straight out of the blocks with a goal after just 2 minutes from Joseph O’Riordan. Brendan Lehane and Colm O’Regan also contributed a brace of points each to leave the hill leading by 1-6 to 0-4 at the first water-break. Killeagh came alive in the next period, scoring 1-2 shortly after the resumption, however the hill responded well scoring 4 points to close the half ahead on a score line of 1-11 to 1-7. The game was put beyond Killeagh’s reach following the restart. Joseph O’Riordan and Colm O’Regan and Mike O’Driscoll all rattled the net, to leave Watergrasshill leading at the 2nd half water-break 4-14 to 1-8. As the second half came to a close, Joseph O’Riordan capped a great evening by adding a further 1-1 to leave his tally for the night at 3-2. With the game finishing Watergrasshill 5-17 Killeagh/Ita’s 2-9, the lads progress to final which is a well-deserved reward for this group who feature a mix of U-14, U-15 and U-16 players. Best wishes also to our goalkeeper Darragh Casey who had to leave the game mid-way through the 1st half due to a nasty leg injury. Get well soon Darragh.

Pitch Signage & Advertising Opportunity

As we enter a new decade, we do so with great optimism and excitement here at Watergrasshill GAA Club. Later this decade we will celebrate our centenary year, which will be a special milestone. While it's important to celebrate the past and the history of the club, its also important we look forward to the future. With this in mind, the club will shortly be undertaking a development project, to prepare the club for the future and further position ourselves at the centre of our community. Part of this project, will be the development of our existing club grounds. To that end we will endeavour to raise a revenue stream from advertising, while giving businesses the opportunity to advertise their services and reach a wider audience within our community. With the playing numbers on the increase our facility will be a busy spot over the coming years and we would love to have your name and business positioned in the hearts and minds of all those who visit on a weekly basis. We are offering advertising space via pitch signage, 3000mm wide x 750mm high. These are a 5-year gloss laminate, flash mounted to 0.2mm skin diabond sign. If you would be interested in this opportunity to advertise and support our club, please contact Claire O Leary on 087-6239297 or any member of the club who can provide assistance.

Club Shop

Our club shop is always open where club crested clothing is available to buy, from shorts to jerseys to training tops and tracksuit bottoms, for adults and juveniles in various sizes. Hurling helmets also available to buy through the club. If you need anything or would like to speak to someone about what is available and sizes, contact Adrienne on 087-7589139. Also keep an eye on our club Facebook page where new club gear can be seen.

Best of Luck:

Best of luck to all the boys and girls who returned to Watergrasshill & Glenville national schools this week after the extended period out. Special mention to all the new starters on what is a big milestone for them and their parents. Good luck also to the staff members who have been preparing really hard for the safe return for them and the students back to school. We all have a part to play to keep the community safe and sound so please continue to follow the guidelines and stay safe.

Ryan’s SuperValu Glanmire Club Loyalty Scheme

Can you help us win a share of €30,000? Ryan’s SuperValu Glanmire continuing in their efforts to Champion Green and support local, have launched the Ryan’s Local Loyalty initiative. This is aimed at local GAA clubs and offers us a great opportunity to get much needed financial support to run the club. Over the coming week we will distribute the loyalty card and we hope you will consider using it and support Watergrasshill GAA by joining us in this great campaign from Ryan’s SuperValu. Thank you for your support if you can.

Members & Trips Abroad:

We would ask playing and non-playing members returning from trips abroad over the coming weeks, of all ages, not to attend the pitch, training or matches for a period of 14 days after your return as per Public Health Guidelines. We would encourage all members to download the HSE Covid tracker app and maintain the guidelines around social distancing, hand washing etc. Thank you.
