The historic Cork County Junior Camogie win in 1969   27/04/2020

The historic Cork County Junior Camogie win in 1969 was followed up a year later with the Hill winning the County Intermediate League defeating Blarney in the final at Clonmult.

In 1971, Watergrasshill fell at the final hurdle in the Championship, this time at the hands of Seandún. In 1975, the team made it to the Cork County Intermediate Camogie League Final but were defeated by Blarney but two years later in 1977, would be an historic year for the Camogie club, more on this tomorrow!

The 70’s did bring success in another way to this new club however. In the early part of the decade, Five of our players were picked for the Imokilly team: Norah O’Farrell, Norah Higgins, Elizabeth Higgins, Margaret Higgins and Angela Higgins
Angela Higgins was captain of the Cork Minors and brought the Munster Cup to the Hill. She was also on the Cork Junior team that reached the All Ireland Final but were defeated by Dublin.
Elizabeth Higgins was selected as goalkeeper on the Cork Junior team for the Munster final against Limerick, played in Cork in 1972.
In 1973, Elizabeth and Angela Higgins won Junior All Ireland Medals with Cork. Mary O’Leary and Val Fitzpatrick were also on this team. Elizabeth, Angela and Nora Higgins won their second Senior County Medals with Imokilly.
In 1975, Mary O’Leary was selected as captain of the Cork Senior team. They were beaten in the All-Ireland Final.

A secretary’s report from 1974 noted, it was decided to hold a meeting in Glenville to recruit more players. Three new members joined and Fr. O’Riordan suggested we should hold another meeting as he felt there would be more to join. There was also four girls joined from Bartlemy in 1974, and it was decided to have three teams - Intermediate, Under 18 and Under 16.
As camogie teams were no longer allowed wear gymslips, the Hill had to get new uniforms. As red and white was already used by another team, it was decided to get lemon jerseys and socks and brown (wrap over) skirts. Each player was expected to buy their own jersey and socks and the club would pay for the skirts. Each player would look after their own uniform and loan it to the U18 and U16 teams for their matches.
It was decided to hold a raffle in the hall on 10 April 1974, tickets to be 3p each or a book of 6 for 15p. 1st Prize - £15, 2nd Prize - £10, 3rd Prize - £5.
