North Cork Final beckons for our U14’s

Our U14’s progressed to the Rebel Óg U14 North Cork Hurling Championship Division 1 Final, with a hard fought, five point victory over Clyda Rovers in the Semi-final. With Watergrasshill playing against a very strong wind in the first half, Clyda got the first point before Ciarán O’Leary replied with point for the Hill. This set the tempo for the first half, where it was every second score for the 30 minutes. Ciarán O’Leary replied to Clyda’s second point with a well struck goal. Clyda’s third point was matched by a point from Cian Cronin-O’Neill. Clyda responded with their fourth point and Cian Cronin-O’Neill drove a long-range ball from a free into Shane O’Callaghan who put in in the back of the net. Clyda scored their fifth point which was negated by a superb long-distance point by Liam Foley. Clyda then scored their sixth point and Shane O’Callaghan added to his scores with a point from a free. Clyda’s seventh point was rebuffed by another Ciarán O’Leary point. Clyda finished the first half with a further point to see Watergrasshill lead by three points 2-05 to Clyda Rovers 0-08. Sam Dennehy opened the second half with a point. Clyda responded with another point before Liam Foley score a goal and a point. The Hill now led by seven points but Clyda weren’t finished and responded with a goal and a point, bringing the game back to three points. Shane O’Callaghan scored a point from a free, Clyda responded with another point before Sam Dennehy produced two excellent points to safeguard the victory on a final scoreline of Watergrasshill 3-10 (19) Clyda Rovers 1-11 (14). Watergrasshill now play St Catherine’s in the Final on September 15. Thank you to the parents and families who gave great vocal support to the team.

Juvenile Activity This Past Week

The U7’s had a great mornings hurling at the Rebel Og Monster Blitz in Pairc Ui Chaoimh last Saturday. We had three teams in action and the boys were brilliant throughout. The improvement levels are great to see and testament to the work done by a great team of coaches. The future is bright when you see the skill levels already developing in this age group. Well done to all involved and thanks to the support shown in the Pairc. Great stuff boys, keep it up.

The U8’s made a trip to Buck Leary’s Cross on Saturday morning to play in a blitz organised by Sars. A great mornings hurling and great fun had by all. With a turnout of 26 players we had four teams who competed very well in every game, playing great hurling and working really hard for each other. These bunch of lads and lady have a great future ahead playing for the club. Thanks to Sars for the invite.

Our U9’s played host to Cobh in the Hill last Saturday morning. We played two great games which were competitive and enjoyable to watch. The lads put in a great effort and had fun throughout. Thanks to the coaches for the hurling development done with this group every week and to those who come out to support. Well done boys, keep up the great work.

Our U10’s were in Killeagh last Saturday for an invitational tournament. We entered two teams and played eight games in total against, Youghal, St. Colman’s, Bride Rovers, Mallow & Kilmallock (Limerick). The boys acquitted themselves excellently putting in some great performances. Great credit goes to coach Brendan Duffy who is putting in huge work with this group and the improvement was certainly seen today. The boys should be proud of their performances and with only 14 players across two nine a side teams they all put in great shifts throughout the days hurling. Great stuff today boys well done to you all.

The under 12’s had a great day out at the Colman Dillon tournament in Erins Own, last Saturday. We were unlucky to be beaten by Carrigtwohill in our opening game, followed by a good win over Lisgoold in our second match. Our third match saw us beaten by a very good Erins Own team which left us in a plate final again against Lisgoold. It was a very close fought game but the lads dug deep to see us over the line winning 2-4 to 2-2. Many thanks to Erin's Own GAA for the invite to a very well run tournament. Well done lads and congrats.

Watergrasshill u16s were second best against a strong Fr. O Neills team in Aghavine, losing out on a score of 2-09 to 6-10. Playing against a strong breeze in the first half, Fr. O Neills led at half time despite two goals from Ian O Callaghan and Andrew Chandler on a shoreline of 2-05 to 4-06. The second half proved to challenging for the team, who only managed 4 points in the second half despite several good scoring opportunities as the Fr. O Neills full back line stood firm against the Hill attacks. The final score was Fr. O Neills 6-10 : 2-09 Watergrasshill. As an aside, no referee turned up from the board so agreement was reached for each team to referee a half. Ger O Brien stepped up from his usual coaching duties with the u13s and 14s to make his debut behind the whistle. Best of luck to Fr O Neills in the final.
