Fixtures & Results

Intermediates off to a winning start in Championship.

Last Friday night in Pairc Ui Rinn our Intermediate’s put in a fine performance against Inniscarra to get their 2019 Championship campaign off to a winning start. The opening quarter was real backs to the wall stuff as Inniscarra outscored us four scores to one inside the opening twelve minutes. Crucially for us though, our score was a goal, which was down to Padraig O Leary robbing possession and using his strength and power to engineer a shooting opportunity which he did from a tight angle and finished to the net. For the rest of the first half we would slowly get into our rhythm, and get ourselves back into the game. Good scores from play by Eoin Barry and Shane O Regan Og would have the game all square at 5pts to 1-2 after 18 minutes. For the next twelve or so minutes right up to halftime, we would trade scores with Inniscarra, our scores coming from clinical free taking from Shane O Regan (who would finish the game with 9 points in total) and a lovely side line cut from Shane Og, arguably score of the game. At halftime the scoreboard read 0-9pts Inniscarra, 1-6 Watergrasshill. The resumption of the second half and in particular the third quarter of the game would be a defining time period come full time. We outscored our opponents 0-7 to 0-2, with wing-forward Shane O’Regan slotting over four frees while Anthony Cronin, Dylan McCarthy and Padraig O’Leary were also on target. This was a real tour-de-force that completely knocked the wind out of Inniscarra’s sails. To maintain our advantage, it was essential that we keep a clean sheet and despite the best efforts of Inniscarra, they never really looked like finding the major breakthrough they needed. Great credit goes to our back line who worked tirelessly and ferociously throughout the game, with Kevin O’Neill and Aaron Ricken particularly effective. Darragh O Callaghen in goals did have to be alert throughout and despite not being truly tested there was a moment in the 51st minute where we was forced into a smart save . Inniscarra emptied the bench in the second half but our lads maintained their composure throughout and played as a real cohesive unit right up to the final whistle, which came just after Anthony Cronin drove a long pass up into the full forward line and Shane Og was on hand to win it in the air and despatch a beautiful strike over the bar to ensure the game was won, on a scoreline of 13pts Inniscarra, 1-16 to the Hill. We have our name in the hat for the next round draw and a big congratulations to Eddie, the coaching & backroom staff and of course the squad on a great performance and well deserved win.

It was a quite weekend in terms of younger age groups playing but our U8’s did get out Saturday for some fun in the sun. Thanks again to Blackrock Hurling Club for inviting Ballinhassig, Kiltha Og and ourselves along. On a beautiful morning for hurling and great set up in Blackrock, the kids really enjoyed their morning. With 3 teams taking part, each team played 3 competitive games . With the morning getting warmer our lads were well tired by the 3rd game but got a burst of energy when they saw Ray Goggin hand out their Easter treats . Also great to see Donagh McHugh play and score a few goals at the club where his grandad (David Cummins) who passed away recently, was great club man for Blackrock, May he Rest in Peace. So Big thanks to Blackrock for a great morning and will return the favor in the next few weeks.

Croke Park Trip:

On Thursday April 18th our U12’s travelled to Croke Park to take part in the GAA GoGames series. What a special day for all the boys and their mentors. The sun shined all day and the lads had a great time visiting GAA headquarters and of course getting to play on the hallowed turf. All the boys dream of playing  there with the Hill on St. Patricks Day, or in the red and white of Cork someday, so what a terrific opportunity to experience it at this age. Thanks to all the mentors and parents who travelled on the day. Some special memories to be treasured!

The Nursery

Calling all boys, born in 2013 & 2014 (even 2015 if you feel they would like to come and have a go). Our U6's are back in action for 2019 and get together every Saturday @10am in the Watergrasshill GAA pitch and every Wednesday @6pm in Glenville. We have some hurleys and helmets for kids who might want to try it out for a couple of weeks. Its €2 per child/family every training. For more information please contact Liam on 0867992132 or Noel on 0872479045. I would encourage all parents of boys in this age group to bring them along. Its great fun, they learn new skills, learn to be part of a team and they make friends for life. We would also love to see any parents willing to give a hand in any way they can, to come forward. It would be greatly appreciated and who knows you might make new friends along the way too. Hope to see you there.
