  A Celebration in Style

A super evening of celebration was enjoyed by a large crowd, who turned out in great style at the Vienna Woods Hotel last Saturday night, where Watergrasshill GAA Club and Watergrasshill Ladies Football & Camogie Club combined forces and celebrated their respective successes in 2018. Medals were awarded to the Junior B Men’s Hurling County & East Cork Champions, Camogie Junior A Championship & League Cup winners and Ladies Junior Football Championship winners. The successful 1968 were also honoured on the evening. Master of Ceremonies was Tommy Bowe who did a fantastic job, with Mens club Chairman Jerome Buttimer and Ladies club Chairman Donal Fitzgerald addressing the crowd. Medals were presented by Watergrasshill legend Eamonn Ryan. It was a great night enjoyed by young and old and showed what a great community we have in Watergrasshill. It’s often said, the measure of a good night is the traffic on the dancefloor, well it was jam packed all night, with some serious movers and shakers! Thank you to the Organising Committee for a great night and also to Dan Linehan on photography duty once more, who captured the evening perfectly. Pictures from the night here on our Facebook page. Blast from the Recent Past

This year marks the 15 year anniversary of our Intermediate Hurling Championship win in 2004. In the final we came up against Dromina who had beaten us in the 2000 and 2003 Junior Championship. The final was played at Pairc ui Chaoimh on 24thOctober and we ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-13 to Dromina’s 2-8. The team was quoted in the Irish Examiner the following day as producing an excellent team performance, reflected in the chasing and harassing of our opponents all over the park, it was also noted the power packed display won the game far more convincingly than the scoreline suggested. John O Keeffe was outstanding at full back, team captain Paddy O Regan turned in a flawless display in midfield, Paudie Cahill was superb at centre forward and our full back that day Brendan Kearney did a marvellous marking job on Dromina’s dangerman Martin Finn. Our scores on this famous day came from Jason Foley 1-1, Paddy O Regan & Johnny Halbert 0-3 each, Eoin O Reilly 1-0, Paudie Cahill & Willie O Leary 0-2 each, Kieran Coakley 0-1, Richie Cahill 0-1. The team that year was managed by John O Regan, Jerome Buttimer and Frankie Halbert. That Sunday night the team and management were greeted back in the village by our supporters and a great nights celebration ensued. The following day was a bank holiday so it was Tuesday when the team visited the schools with the Paddy Walsh Memorial Cup and the children that day enjoyed a half day to celebrate in the great occasion.
